Orbital welding

High quality stainless steel processing

The processing of high-quality stainless steel materials requires a high degree of skill. Hyline uses computer-aided orbital welding machines to meet the highest grade of perfection. In combination with the application of advanced installation techniques this will lead to optimal results.

Hyline welds stainless steel alloys from 6mm up to 168mm with closed welding heads.

We are certified for orbital welding of Hastelloy C22 alloys. Hastelloy is high-temperature (1100°C) and corrosion-resistant superalloy, often used in gas turbines, chemical reactors and aircraft engines.
As customers demand full quality control on orbital welded systems, the welds undergo boroscopic and gamma graphic inspections.

Having originated in the semiconductor industry to meet the need for critical gas distribution, orbital welding technology has been steadily gaining in popularity over the last few decades and is now set to be applied to a broad range of industries. Today it is used in critical systems and product lines for the pharmaceutical, biotechnical, fine chemical and food industries.

Hyline uses orbital welding machines produced by AMI, Polysoude and Orbimatic, with both open and closed welding heads.

What is a critical system ?

A critical system is a system where failure is not acceptable and is therefore called "zero-shutdown".
Examples: purified water loops, water for injection loops, pure steam systems, clean process air, lab gas systems, cleaning-in-place systems, sanitization-in-place systems, ...

What is orbital welding ?

The concept of Orbital Welding is basically a loosely defined term which is usually used for processes only, where the arc travels at least 360 degrees around the work piece without interruption. An automated and autogenous gas tungsten arc welding process. Orbital-Welding belongs to the category of semi-mechanized (TIG-) welding.

Due to the need for good control of the weld puddle, the Orbital-Welding process is only implemented with the TIG process and relevant rules like selection of gases, cleanliness, weldability of specific materials and consequential mechanical strength specifications such as tensile and bend loading, are very important.

Orbital-welding is currently used whenever the quality of the weld joint has the highest priority. These demands are not only limited to mechanical strength and X-ray qualification, but also to the important aspects of the aesthetics of the weld seam. For any user, a uniform, flat and smooth root-pass is the main reason for using this process.

Consequently, it is favoured in the following areas:

  • Chemical Industry,
  • Food- and Beverage Industry,
  • Pharmaceutical Industry,
  • Bio-technology,
  • High-purity water Systems, Semiconductor industry,
  • Aircraft- and aerospace industry

Hyline uses these highly-skilled techniques to optimum effect.

Our continuously trained welders and fitters have a wealth of experience in the design, production and maintenance of stainless steel piping systems.
